God knows your real identity

wednesday night we wrapped up our discussion on identity. two weeks ago, we discussed that our false identity, our worldly identity, is in our position, appearance, wealth, and skills. this week we discovered our spiritual position, appearance, wealth, and skills by diving into scripture.

  • spiritual position
    • we are His children

see what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! and that is what we are! – 1 john 3:1

the world wants us to believe all that matters is what position we have on the sports team, what chair we are in in band, or what grade we are in; God calls us his children and that is the only position that should matter to us.

  • spiritual appearance
    • we are righteous

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. – 2 corinthians 5:21

    • we are wonderfully made

for You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. i will praise You, for i am fearfully and wonderfully made. – psalm 139:12-14

    • we are His masterpiece

we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ to do good works. – ephesians 2:10

when you think of a masterpiece, you do not think of a work of art that was poorly done. if you have ever made a masterpiece, you have probably been very proud of your work and wanted to show it off to everyone. God is the same with us. the Bible says angels rejoice when we turn our lives over to Jesus. a celebration happened! we are His masterpiece and regardless of what types of clothes we wear, how our hair looks, or any other physical appearance we may struggle with, God made us wonderful, righteous masterpieces.

  • spiritual wealth
    • we are heirs to the Kingdom

listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love him? – james 2:5

    • we have every spiritual blessing

praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. – ephesians 1:3

sometimes we are like a homeless person on the side of the street, begging for food and sleeping in the cold, all the while having a million-dollar lottery ticket in our pocket. it is right there, it just needs to be claimed. in the same way, we, as children of God, have access to such great wealth, and so many people never claim it. He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing and his Kingdom. we just have to rise up and walk in it.

  • spiritual skills
    • we have gifts from God

each one has his own gift from God, one in this way and another in that way. – 1 corinthians 7:7

    • we lack nothing

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. – 2 peter 1:3

    • we have Christ’s help

i can do all things through Christ who give me strength. – philippians 4:13

it is important to highlight here that we each have gifts from God that are different than others, yet we lack nothing. we should never look upon someone else’s gifts and get lost in wondering, complaining, or likewise about why we do not have their gift. the greatest their of contentment is comparison. be satisfied knowing that God has prepared you with everything you need, and He fills in the gaps as needed.
